8 Soft Facts About Shorting

By |2018-10-24T11:58:46-04:00October 24, 2018 11:53 am|

Michael Steinhardt, one of the pioneers in the hedge fund industry once said that he probably has shorted more stocks than anyone else and when he looks back cumulatively at all his shorts he probably broke even on them. Here are some of the rules I have when it comes to shorting; 1. Don’t short oversold markets; the market has a history of bailing out the bulls, not the bears. Currently, we are somewhat oversold, and you might hear that oversold can become more oversold, but the odds always favor a dead cat bounce than an outright crash. I still prefer [...]

When It All Falls Down

By |2018-10-24T12:36:10-04:00October 24, 2018 11:35 am|

The market continues to be under pressure; the S&P500 is down -8% since it peaked in 9/20/2018, the small caps $IWM the weakest of them all is down -13% since it peaked on 9/4/2018. Most individual names are down a lot more than that. My advice when the market corrects is pretty consistent every time, be diligent with your stocks, take your losses, move on, and live to fight another day. Unlike the indices, stocks come and go, some go and never come back.  The indices tend to move higher over time. The average intra-year decline in the S&P500 in [...]

Where a stock has come from is very important when considering buying a "BREAKOUT". The probabilities of a stock moving higher after being up 5,6,7-days in a row before are slim. The context of the "breakout" is important. You shouldn't buy a breakout just because it eclipsed a previous high especially if the stock made a big move just prior to breaking out. Sure, every so often the market will reward chasing but more often than not you are going to catch some heat first before getting paid if you buy "breakouts" in stocks that are already extended.   Frank Zorrilla, [...]

Trader’s LinkFest

Constellation Brands $STZ plan to invest an additional $4 billion in Canadian pot producer $CGC (stake up to 38%) put all the Cannabis stocks in play for the week and possibly for the next few months just like Bitcoin did for certain "bitcoin" stocks last year. Some of these stocks made a huge move in the last week and should not chase them, allow them to set-up properly before you step in. A lot of the names trade on the pink sheets, so you have to be real careful or avoid them, some of the more liquid known names are; [...]
